Wilderness Horse Camp WHC 2
August 16-22 (7 Days): Mayfield Base Camp
Our Wilderness Horse Camps will take place at our main basecamp on remote and beautiful Mayfield Lake. Greet the sunrise from the dock, sipping on a steaming cup of fresh coffee while moose graze in the shallows or a group of caribou travels by. At day’s end, treat your body to a steam in the log sauna. Then, if you’re brave, cool off with a moonlight dip in the lake.
Amenities including a cook (all meals included), sauna, canoes, canvas wall tents, and a timber frame pavilion. Wayne Sawchuk and Karl Mattson will be on hand and, through evening presentations, both will be sharing their experiences on the land.
These Wilderness Horse Camps are a perfect choice for singles, couples, or families. Riding is an optional activity, but a good level of fitness is required to fully participate in the activities. Guests will fly in from Muncho Lake with Liard Air and return to Muncho with Liard Air.
Daily Itinerary:
Day 1
Arrive at Mayfield Basecamp via Liard Air Floatplane from Muncho Lake. There will be an orientation by the MK Adventures crew and a review of the plan for the week. Guests will set up personal tents or other sleeping accommodations as requested. There will be an evening talk by Wayne regarding his history with the Muskwa-Kechika, its formation, management, and future. To learn more about Wayne, you can watch CBC Gem’s Land of the Dreamers. Karl will give a talk regarding his life as an artist, filmmaker, and conservationist, and he will share stories from his epic wilderness canoe trips. Watch Karl’s award-winning film on one of those trips, Sweetwater to Saltwater .
Day 2
After a basic orientation on horse riding and safety, we will head out on an upriver day ride to the Gataga River where we will check out sandbars for wildlife tracks and enjoy a riverside campfire lunch.
Day 3
A day on the water. Karl will give a basic orientation on canoeing and water safety. We will then explore Mayfield by canoe, checking out beaver houses and dams, the outlet to the lake, an osprey nest, lakeside moose licks, and more.
Day 4
Day ride to the alpine. With a 6 am get up we will enjoy a spectacular ride onto the alpine mountainsides of the Rainbow Range. If we are lucky we could spot caribou, moose, mountain goats, or black or grizzly bear. A highlight will be a lunch beside a high alpine tarn. We will arrive back at Mayfield in time for dinner.
Day 5
Day hike (2-3 hours) led by Wayne through the boreal forest to a wildlife lick frequented by caribou, moose, and the occasional mountain goat. We will identify tracks and markings of the various animals that live in the area.
Day 6
Downriver dayride to the Gataga River. We will explore a couple of spectacular sandbars that hold a record of the comings and goings of the local wildlife, as well as a riverside lunch and campfire. In the evening Wayne will give a talk on his experiences in the Muskwa-Kechika, drawing on his 40 years of experience on the land.
Day 7
Meet the floatplane for the flight back to Muncho and the trip home!
